A place to explore and buy perennial vegetables and other food plants.
A shorter variety of Jerusalem artichoke (grows to 150-160cm) and one which is more likely to flower in the UK. The tubers are white.
Tasty root vegetable. Extremely useful if you can digest it well (but quite commonly causes flatulence!) Just dig tubers from a colony of the plants as you need them in winter.
For good yields in following years replant some tubers at 30cm spacings and add a mulch of compost. The plants grow tall so are best planted where they won’t shade other crops. They are not necessarily a good windbreak as they are quite easily toppled by wind. Although they have a reputation for being invasive, they are easy to remove from a bed by waiting until the shoots emerge in mid-spring and digging out the young plants then.
