A place to explore and buy perennial vegetables and other food plants.
This delicious perennial salad plant (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) is spicier than annual salad rocket (Eruca sativa). It also has smaller leaves but produces masses of them in a sprawling bush. It will grow in semi-shade and copes well with dry soils too. The variety for sale is ‘Dragon’s Tongue’ which has attractive red-veined leaves on young plants. I haven’t yet grown this to maturity to see if the red veins persist in older plants. It seems to be slightly more mellow in flavour than my established wild rocket.
