A place to explore and buy perennial vegetables and other food plants.
Purple tree collards are still rare in the UK but are better known in America. They are tall, fast growing, long-lived perennial kales – reaching about 240cm I’m told (my tallest plant is a bit over 150cm at present). The leaves are green when young but soon turn purply-red in colour (and are especially colourful in cooler weather). The flavour is very good and not bitter. They are said to be hardy to about -5 deg C. My oldest plant has survived two winters with some polythene wrapping for protection which may not be necessary in mild winters or sheltered planting spots.
